New Year's Day Peace Hike

16th Annual New Year’s Day Peace Hike
A Commemoration of Resilience and Remembrance
01 January 2026
Yachats, Washington State, USA

Join Shamans Directory Ambassador and Team Member Robert Wakeley Wheeler (Wake) on New Year’s Day, as the community of Yachats, Oregon, will once again gather for the 16th Annual Peace Hike, a walk of remembrance and shared hope.

This cherished tradition invites all people to honor the Indigenous ancestors who endured profound suffering on this land, and to stand in solidarity with their descendants whose strength continues to guide the way forward.

The Peace Hike commemorates the painful history of the Alsea Subagency and carries the story of Amanda, a blind Coos woman, whose forced march to Yachats in 1864 remains one of the many heartbreaking chapters of this region. By walking together, these truths are acknowledged, honoring those who were lost, and affirming the commitment to learn, listen, and heal.

Participants are encouraged to prepare their hearts by exploring the powerful educational resources offered by the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw, Alsea, and Siletz Peoples. These teachings deepen our understanding and ensure that this gathering is not only a walk, but a meaningful act of remembrance.

All are welcome to join this community of neighbors, Elders, families, and friends as we begin the New Year with reverence, unity, and a shared prayer for peace. May this walk shine a light on the past and help illuminate a more compassionate future.
